artist-confessions: Advice for Commissioners
I hear a lot of about people complaining of not being satisfied with the commission they purchased. It’s your own choice whether or not you want to pay for someone to draw or make something for you. If you don’t like what they did for you, then it is more than often your own fault for choosing to commission them (honest artists shouldn’t point this out though)!
When you decide to buy a commission, go through this:
- Look through the artist’s gallery and MAKE SURE you like what they do
- Look at the artist’s previous commissions
- Think about the price (e.g. Is a simple sketch really worth $40?)
- When you send the details of what you want to the artist, be as detailed as possible. Include references, pose specifications, and whatever else is applicable. It’s best if you don’t leave too much for the artist to make up themselves (which may also lead to the artist taking longer to finish the commission).
- Once they have accepted your commission, the best you can do now is wait. Do not continuously ask the artist on how your commission is going. Ask the commissioner how long her or she would usually take to finish a commission. If it has been around about twice as long as the commissioner said it would take, then it should be fine to ask the artist on the status of the piece. Some artists can take a whole year or more to finish this. IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO WAIT FOR IT TO BE FINISHED, DON’T COMMISSION THE ARTIST.
- If you no longer want the commission, honest artists would usually refund you, as long as they haven’t begun work on it.
And remember, don’t be too rude if you’re not happy with the commission. The artist will very often not be willing to redo it. Remember to spend your money wisely!-anonymousto see the commission business with different perspective.
